Don’t lose out on Child Benefit available to children in further education – Accountant in Wimbledon

Parents of children aged 16 to 19 who continue their education or training after GCSEs can extend their Child Benefit payments. If this applies to you, HM Revenue & Customs (HMRC) should be sending you a reminder letter, which includes a QR code. Scanning this code will direct you to a GOV.UK page where you can easily update your claim.

You should receive this letter by 17 July. If you do not receive it, you can make the claim via GOV.UK or using the HMRC app. You will need your Government Gateway user ID and password to proceed.

Child Benefit is worth £1,331 per year for your first or only child, and up to £881 annually for each additional child. Payments automatically stop on 31 August after your child turns 16 unless you renew your claim.

Payments can be extended if your child is engaged in full-time approved non-advanced education, such as:

  • A levels or Scottish Highers
  • International Baccalaureate
  • Home education (if started before age 16, unless a statement of special educational needs is assessed by your local authority)
  • T levels
  • NVQs up to level 3

Unpaid approved training courses also qualify, including:

  • Wales: Foundation Apprenticeships, Traineeships, or the Jobs Growth Wales+ scheme
  • Northern Ireland: PEACEPLUS Youth Programme 3.2, Training for Success, or Skills for Life and Work
  • Scotland: Employability Fund programme and No One Left Behind

GET IN TOUCH WITH OUR WIMBLEDON ACCOUNTANTS if you need help extending your claim or assistance with the process. We are here to support you!
